Once upon a time, barely 100 years ago, the world was in the grip of the ‘Great Depression’ – and it was from this period that the idea for Peaky was born. That doesn’t sound very cheerful – but what we have taken to heart and been inspired by is people’s need to seek distractions from the seriousness of everyday life – and instead focus on food, drink, entertainment and social gatherings.
The food is inspired by a time when ‘real food’ was appreciated
. We’ve looked at dinner clubs, speakeasies and set our sights on the Cotton Club, one of the most famous nightclubs in New York in the 1920s and 1930s. This is where we’ve picked the gems: eating well, taking a little time for yourself, being captivated by the entertainment, enjoying a drink, meeting friends and maybe even making new ones. At Peaky, you shouldn’t have to spend a fortune, you should be able to meet friends over a snack and a glass of wine. The food is inspired by a time when ‘real food’, cooked from scratch, was appreciated. The core is in Swedish food culture, but every now and then we also look across the ocean.
